I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – shutting down the federal government is serious. Using that threat as a political football is irresponsible and dangerous.
Hundreds of thousands of government employees – including many right here in Idaho – will go without pay for who knows how long. Poor working families who depend on food assistance like SNAP and WIC will go hungry. And the shutdown will lead to delays in Social Security, Disability, and Medicare claims.
And, just like the last time we were in this position, there is simply no one to blame but House Republicans.
First they kicked their own guy out of leadership.
Then they wasted weeks picking a new Speaker instead of doing their jobs.
Now they’ve installed one of the most far-right, reactionary, and inexperienced members of their ranks as Speaker, Mike Johnson, who has no plan to get us out of this.
In fact, last Friday, Johnson dismissed Congress early for the weekend so he could jet off to Paris instead of working to stop a devastating shutdown that will cost our economy billions of dollars.
Now Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene are threatening to take out the NEW speaker if she doesn’t get her way. Republicans are so divided by their own radicalism that they can’t come together on anything.
And it’s the everyday American who will pay the price if the government shuts down on Friday.
My opponent, Mike Simpson, is one of those who voted for Johnson as Speaker and who REFUSES to speak up and get his caucus in line. Can you pitch in right now and help me defeat him next year?
