Rep. Troy E. Nehls Censures Rashida Tlaib Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. Veterans Day is a time to thank and honor every American who has answered the call of duty and served in the military-especially those who have served during times of war, guarding our country and its way of life. Service to your country is a selfless calling, and I believe it is among life's greatest achievements. Let's take a moment to remember and honor all who served to protect our great country, our freedoms, and democracy across the world. May God bless our Veterans, and those who are serving in harm's way. This Week in Washington Rep. Troy E. Nehls Speaks at House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime on Oversight of the Bureau of Prisons The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance held a hearing to conduct oversight on the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to examine the staffing challenges at the (BOP), the implementation of the First Step Act (FSA), a Trump-era policy that sought to reduce the size of the federal prison population and reduce recidivism while still maintaining public safety, and to examine the expansion and use of compassionate release and home confinement. The Committee also addressed the challenges facing incarcerated women in federal prisons. In 2018, President Donald J. Trump rolled back Obama-era policies related to its Transgender Offender Manual, which simply struck a sentence that instructed BOP officials to consider transgender inmates gender identity when making decisions regarding prison housing and required BOP officials to use biological sex as the determination for placement decisions. Upon taking office, President Biden reversed President Trump’s policies and reissued President Obama's guidelines, going even further to require prison staff to use a transgender person’s preferred name and pronouns. During the hearing, I questioned BOP Director Colette Peters on whether she agreed with President Biden's decision to allow biological men to be incarcerated with biological women. I also questioned Director Peters on whether the BOP is paying for hormone and other transgender treatments in prison with Americans hard-earned taxpayer dollars, to which she replied that the BOP has paid for 2 people to receive "gender-affirming care." As a former Sheriff and father of three daughters, this is very troubling to me. Biological men should not be placed with biological women in prison. I will continue to work with my colleagues on the House Judiciary Committee to ensure President Trump’s policies are reinstated in 2024. Watch my remarks from the hearing HERE. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes 'YES' to Censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib The United States House of Representatives officially censured Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-12). Rep. Tlaib is a Hamas sympathizer and has continued to spew lies and disinformation regarding the war in Israel. She has continued to call for the destruction of the state of Israel and has a history of making antisemitic remarks. I was proud to vote 'YES' for her censure. Antisemitism is unacceptable, especially from a sitting Member of Congress, and does not represent anything America stands for. This Week in TX-22 Rep. Troy E. Veterans History Project Submissions Are Now Open I am pleased to announce that submissions to the Veterans History Project (VHP) is now open to veterans residing in TX-22 who served in the U.S. military in any capacity. VHP accepts Veterans’ personal narratives in the forms of original, unedited audio-and video-recorded interviews, photographs, letters, diaries, journals, military documents, two-dimensional artwork, maps, and unpublished memoirs that meet minimum requirements. Researchers, scholars and educators rely upon VHP collections as a primary source. These oral histories, photographs, manuscripts and other original materials are a rich supplement to historical texts, and a valued cultural resource. Veterans’ family members treasure the memories that are permanently preserved at the Library of Congress for future generations. A briefing will be scheduled prior to your interview in order to answer questions and prepare participants. Pre-interviews may also be scheduled during this time. The Department has a 24/7 coordinating group communicating with U.S. citizens and providing them assistance through phone calls and an online form. U.S. citizens seeking to be in touch with the U.S. Embassy in Israel can fill out the form ([link removed]) or call 1-833-890-9595 or 1-606-641-0131. While commercial flights remain available and should be considered a first option, the State Department will soon offer departure assistance to American citizens through chartered transportation. American citizens who want to leave Israel on USG-chartered transportation must submit a Crisis Intake Form. After submitting a Crisis Intake Form, American citizens can expect an email from the State Department with additional guidance imminently.
