Arise legislative recap: March 9, 2020

Arise's Jim Carnes discusses how the coronavirus outbreak and the closure of Pickens County Medical Center showcase Alabama's need for Medicaid expansion. Also, in the wake of the recent execution of Nathaniel Woods, Jim talks about HB 359, which would forbid the death penalty in capital cases where the jury does not agree unanimously to impose it.

Tell Gov. Ivey to expand Medicaid!

The looming coronavirus threat is a harsh reminder of the need to ensure everyone can get health care when they need it. Medicaid expansion would provide that peace of mind to more than 340,000 Alabamians who are uninsured or who struggle to afford coverage. Email Gov. Kay Ivey today and urge her to expand Medicaid!

AL.com: More than a quarter of Alabama's rural hospitals at high risk of closure

Pickens County isn’t the only place in Alabama at risk of losing life-saving medical services. Nearly 90% of our state’s rural hospitals operate in the red, and one in four are at high risk of closure. Medicaid expansion would be a financial lifeline to protect hospitals and clinics that serve people in communities across Alabama.

Alabama News Network: Alabama Arise lobbies for grocery tax repeal

Our advocacy to eliminate the state sales tax on groceries is still going strong. Alabama should “end the grocery tax quickly and responsibly,” Arise board vice president Ana Delia Valeriano said during our Legislative Day news conference on Feb. 25. “This is the year to untax groceries once and for all.”

WRBL: Should Alabama repeal its grocery tax?

The short answer: Absolutely yes. “As y’all know, our tax system is upside down,” Arise’s Robyn Hyden tells WRBL in Columbus, Ga. “The people with the least to give get taxed the most. At the same time, people at the top don’t pay their fair share.”
