Honoring Those We've Lost

On November 20, we'll mark Trans Day of Remembrance. This year, NCTE has created a digital memorial at TransRemembrance.org for both grieving and celebrating those we've lost.

So many precious trans lives have been extinguished, and to grieve is an arduous journey. However, in our period of grief, we persist. We pay tribute to and exalt the existences of those who have departed, and our brilliance remains unaltered. We shine with a fire that will burn long after our time on Earth.

Trans people have always been here, and we always will be.

Visit and share the memorial and the Remembrance Report to learn about the bright and beloved trans lives we've lost, and help us ensure that they will never be forgotten.

The 2023 Remembrance Report highlights the need for collective mourning and advocacy. Everyone lost was valuable and deserves to be recognized as their true and whole selves. Trans Day of Remembrance reminds us to reflect on our collective responsibility to protect the most vulnerable and heal the wounds they have suffered. The youngest person in the Report was just 14 years old, which only emphasizes the need to create a world where all trans youth can grow and thrive.

The full list of people memorialized by NCTE's Remembrance Report is a result of tireless efforts by members of staff, activists, volunteers, and families dedicated to remembering the losses suffered by the trans community. This report emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and honors diverse identities beyond the cisgender binary.

The importance of Transgender Day of Remembrance has never been more profound. No matter what, the trans community and our allies will continue the journey towards a more just and compassionate society.

The National Center for Transgender Equality advocates to change policies and society to increase understanding and acceptance of transgender people. In the nation’s capital and throughout the country, NCTE works to replace disrespect, discrimination, and violence with empathy, opportunity, and justice.
