Jack, digital advertising is a colossal industry. In 2022, global internet advertising brought in $484 billion with projections increasing to $663 billion by 2027.
You would think that online companies, in particular, digital news outlets would be raking in the big dollars, but they are not. So where is all that advertising revenue going? Big Tech like Amazon, Facebook, and Google take up the lion's share of the advertising revenue. Leaving little leftover for the outlets reporting on critical stories that affect us all.
This leaves far too many news outlets struggling to make ends meet and in some cases, just survive. Many have had to make drastic financial cuts, like slashing budgets, cutting departments, or laying off staff. Some have shut down operations entirely. Unfortunately, the real cost of these cuts is affordable access to quality news at a time when fake news and misinformation is running rampant.
Daily Kos hasn't been immune from these financial hardships. Earlier this year we were forced to make financial cuts and other changes in hopes of getting us on a more fiscally sustainable path. Throughout the year, we have relied more and more on donations from our readers and activists to help make up for our lost income so we can just pay the bills. However, now we are seeing a drop in the number of donations.
Daily Kos has survived for twenty years because of the generous support of our readers and activists. Please support our work with a donation of $5 or more today.
