John, so far, more than 1,100 people have been criminally charged for their actions around the January 6th insurrection. Even Donald Trump has been indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States government and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding related to the events of that day.

But there are people who were central to Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results who haven’t yet been held accountable: Trump’s fake electors.

The “fake electors” plot was a plan to overturn the election masterminded by Kenneth Chesebro, who was indicted in Georgia earlier this year, and who is now cooperating with prosecutors. The plot involved switching out legitimate slates of electors in key states Joe Biden had won with fake electors recruited by Trump and his advisers. Those states included Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

John, so far only Michigan has filed charges against the full slate of fake electors. But we believe fake electors in every single state need to be held accountable.

Trump supporters across seven states covertly met and signed documents falsely asserting that they were the legitimate electors to try to stop Joe Biden from winning the 2020 election.

This fake electors scheme was part of a multi-pronged effort by Trump and his allies to stop the peaceful transition of power after the 2020 election and, according to the January 6th Select Committee’s Final Report, “led directly” to the violence that occurred on January 6th.

Every fake elector needs to answer for their efforts to overturn the results of the election.
