This past weekend, we observed Veterans Day, and I wanted to make sure you saw this Op-Ed from New Politics Senior Campaign Advisor, U.S. Army combat veteran, and my friend, Chris Costa, on the role veterans play in our democracy once their active duty ends.

As you know, this is a turbulent moment for our democracy, and the stakes for future generations are high. Now more than ever, we need leaders who know what it means to put our country and communities first.

“What I’ve learned in the time since I took off the uniform is that my country will always need me. It needs all of us, especially those who’ve demonstrated a willingness to serve, to continually show up, to be active participants. During the 2020 election, one-third of eligible Americans opted not to participate. That should be unacceptable to us.

The current threats to our democracy are real and urgent. Dark money, special interests, and closed primaries incentivize the loudest, most divisive voices in the room. Binary and tribal thinking has reduced our politics to a game of winners and losers; of us vs. them…”
