On Tuesday, November 28, you are invited to join Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil for our next “Policy Spotlight” event, a one-on-one conversation with Nora D. Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health.
They will discuss topics including America’s opioid crisis, NIDA’s recent “Primary Care Challenge” seeking innovative solutions ways for primary care practices to spot and prevent substance use initiation and escalation, and how telemedicine has been shown to increase treatment access and retention for those receiving addiction care.
Appointed NIDA director in May 2003, Dr. Volkow is a research psychiatrist who pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate how substance use affects brain functions. Her work has been instrumental in demonstrating that drug addiction is a brain disorder.
Prior to joining NIDA, Dr. Volkow held several leadership positions at the Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, including Director of Nuclear Medicine, Chair of the Medical Department, and Associate Laboratory Director for Life Sciences.
Dr. Volkow was also a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Associate Dean of the Medical School at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
