DIFS Reminds Consumers to Watch Out for Financial Services, Insurance Fraud Schemes During International Fraud Awareness Week Media Contact:?Laura Hall, 517-290-3779, [email protected]? FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:?November 13, 2023? (LANSING, MICH) This week is International Fraud Awareness Week, and the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding consumers to be on the lookout for fraudsters impersonating bank or credit union employees on the phone to steal personal information. Consumers who suspect they fell victim to fraud should report it to the DIFS Fraud Investigation Unit (FIU). ?DIFS has received reports of fraud cases involving consumers giving their online account login information to callers pretending to be bank and credit union employees. It is important to remember to never give out personal information to unsolicited callers, even if the caller ID makes it appear that the call is from your bank or credit union,? said DIFS Director Anita Fox. ?At DIFS, we promote fraud awareness and work to protect Michiganders from fraud and bad actors in the insurance and financial services industries. Michiganders who suspect fraud can report it online or by calling DIFS at 877-999-6442 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.? Here are important steps that consumers can take to avoid falling prey to fraud:
The DIFS FIU investigates criminal and fraudulent activity related to the insurance and financial markets and DIFS works with the Attorney General and other state, county, and local law enforcement to investigate these cases and refer them for prosecution. In addition to the work done by the FIU, DIFS also offers a variety of resources to help fight fraud, including the DIFS website, publications, videos, and the DIFS Locator, which enables consumers to verify that they are working with properly licensed individuals and businesses in the insurance and financial services industries. Suspected fraud in the insurance and financial sectors can be reported to the FIU safely, easily, and, in most cases, anonymously by calling 877-999-6442 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by visiting Michigan.gov/ReportFraud2DIFS. The mission of the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services is to ensure access to safe and secure insurance and financial services fundamental for the opportunity, security, and success of Michigan residents, while fostering economic growth and sustainability in both industries. In addition, the Department provides consumer protection, outreach, and financial literacy and education services to Michigan residents.
