It’s always hard to say these words: On February 14, 2018, my beloved daughter Jaime was killed in her own high school in Parkland, Florida, at the hands of a mass shooter who never should have had access to a gun. That day, Jen, Jesse, and I lost a piece of our hearts that no amount of time, thoughts, or prayers will ever heal.

I was devastated. And enraged. I knew that I had to do something. No family should have to endure the loss that mine did but, unfortunately, far too many have and will.

The truth is, the only way we’re going to prevent future mass shootings and save lives is by electing a historic wave of gun violence prevention candidates to office who will have the courage to enact common sense gun reforms.

That’s why I’m humbly asking if you’ll join Blue Amp Action and me in electing one of those leaders: Dr. Brian Williams. Brian is a first-time candidate and trauma surgeon who treats victims of gun violence who needs your help so he can win an open seat in Congress.

 

In the aftermath of the Parkland mass shooting, it immediately became clear that the politicians and institutions my community had trusted to protect us had failed us miserably. For the extremist state legislators and federal lawmakers supposedly “representing” us in Congress, our children’s lives had a price.

But through that anger and despair, I found a sense of hope.

I remain hopeful because of the great people I have had the good fortune of meeting over the years who are dedicated to saving lives from senseless gun violence. Dr. Brian Williams is one of them.

He never thought he would run for office – but after responding to a mass shooting in Dallas, he knew there was work to do beyond the operating room. He then advised Congress on what would become the first major Federal gun reform bill signed into law in thirty years and is now running for an open House seat in Texas.

He’s a person who is putting himself out there because of what he has seen and he’s exactly the kind of leader we need representing and fighting for us in Congress. Dr. Brian Williams has been a fearless leader on this issue and will be in Congress.

For all the families who have lost someone to gun violence and for all those families who will soon experience this devastation without life-saving reforms, I’m asking if you’ll join me in electing Dr. Brian Williams and a wave of gun violence prevention champions like him at all levels of government.
