John, fact-checking is not enough.
Simple fact-checking is not enough to address the rising tide of right-wing misinformation, and it doesn’t stop all too many news outlets from platforming that misinformation.
We need fact-crusading, not just fact-checking.
We'll explain the difference between these in a moment, but if you want to support journalism that fact-checks and crusades , will you chip in $5 to power our rigorous journalism? [[link removed]]
A journalist’s ultimate task is to provide people with the critical information they need to accurately assess the issues and events impacting their community. When news organizations and journalists provide a platform for misinformation to spread unchecked, they do themselves and the people they serve a massive disservice.
COURIER was founded on the radical idea that media organizations must prioritize truth-telling and rigorous journalism above turning a profit and driving clicks.
We’ve seen over and over the damaging impact of mainstream media organizations neglecting this responsibility. Rather than actively confronting and fighting disinformation, they strive for so-called “balance.” More times than not, the result is that they end up spreading misleading and false information instead of correcting it.
By contributing $5, you're helping to power our efforts to provide the good journalism our communities need at this critical time. [[link removed]]
For the good of our democracy, this has to change, John. As local newsrooms continue to dry up across the country, the far-right is intensifying efforts to spread dangerous, anti-democratic ideas that divide and hurt our communities.
That’s what makes our work at COURIER different. Rather than passively fact-check right-wing BS, our journalists across our nine newsrooms are actively fact-crusading and holding bad actors accountable for their lies and deceit.
Our innovative model not only informs but crucially confronts bad information in real time — all without locking our stories behind a paywall or subscription fees.
But for us to continue fact-crusading in the local communities who need it the most, we need to continue to have the resources our newsrooms need to keep the lights on.
That's where you come in. If you'd like to support the engaging, fact-crusading journalism our democracy deserves, will you pitch in $5 or anything you can today? [[link removed]]
