Dear OCCRP Reader,
Reporting on organized crime in Romania often takes you well beyond Europe’s borders.
When investigating a massive ATM-skimming gang from Romania, my home country, I needed help in Mexico, where the group stole roughly $1 billion from rigged cash-machines.
I was able to accomplish this by being part of the OCCRP network, a special team of hundreds of journalists who know how to follow illicit money flows across borders. Together with my colleagues from Latin America, I obtained government records and conducted interviews with sensitive sources 10,000+ kilometers away from Bucharest.
Now, OCCRP is ramping up this winning formula ([link removed]) . We currently run over 130 cross-border investigations a year — but we need to do more. That’s where you come in.
By making a donation today ([link removed]) , you will directly help fund our unique and effective approach to investigative journalism. Contributions will also grant you access to exclusive webinars ([link removed]) with OCCRP journalists as well as other membership benefits.
Help us investigate what others can’t.

The Riviera Maya Gang is of course far from the only organized crime group to be exposed by the OCCRP network. Last week, we published NarcoFiles, a major investigative series based on leaked documents from the Colombian prosecutors’ office, which showed how drug-trafficking in Latin America has modernized since the days of Pablo Escobar.
Three journalists who worked on the NarcoFiles project will discuss their findings in our next webinar on Thursday, November 16, 2023. ([link removed]) You can attend if you make a donation ([link removed]) before then.
Thank you for your time,
Attila Biro,
Founder of Context Romania
Member of the OCCRP network
