Today, we celebrate Veteran’s Day, a day where we honor those who have served in the defense of our great country. There are many reasons why people serve in the military, some are by choice but not all have been. For me it was a calling, I initially was denied entry due to a head injury a few years prior to my high school graduation, after the first Persian Gulf War started, they started getting a little more lenient on medial waivers and I was able to enlist, I jumped at the chance.
Some join to get out of poverty and get a better life, and some do it for education or to pay off student loans. Others had no choice in the manner and were drafted to serve, yet serve they did. One interesting fact I saw today, Native Americans serve at 5 times the rate of other Americans in the armed service. I was always amazed by the number of Natives and those from the Asian Pacific who served with me.
When we serve this country in the military, we do so with the knowledge that our lives are no longer truly our own but belong to the American people for her defense. With that gift, that we have given to the American people, the country accepts a certain responsibility to that service member, to not risk the life of that service person if it is not in defense of this country and to take responsibility for the care of that person if they are in injured while serving the country.
These are responsibilities that our country has failed to live up to at times. I would like to think that the desire to address that failure is in the DNA of the Constitutional Republic Party. It is something we will be looking at with any of our candidates, either on a state level or national level. It is why we have taken a lead in projects such as Defend the Guard, and it is why we have been a strong advocate of a stay-at-home national defense policy. It is why I am sitting here tonight writing this.
If we truly want to honor our veterans, we must ensure that we do not send them to fight in wars that have no direct impact on our national defense. There is a lot of truth in the saying that the best thing we can do for a Combat Veteran is to stop making them. If our service people are injured while doing their military duties, we must ensure that they are given proper treatment and compensation and that their care is not hampered by big government bureaucracy. We need to honor our commitment to them. This means more than a thank you for your service, a discount, or a free meal to them. This is how we really stand for our veterans, by electing people who will honor them with their actions, not their political promises.
Thank you to all of you who have served, IGYS.
