John,
Given the outbreak across our region, I want to send an update about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Washington State. The impact has been truly heartbreaking, and my deepest condolences go out to the families and friends who have lost loved ones. I am doing everything I can to aid in the response.
This week, Congress was able to pass a $8.3 billion emergency aid package. This bipartisan bill will provide critical resources to support state and local public health agencies. It will support the development of therapeutics and a vaccine as well as provide loans for affected small businesses to lessen the economic blow from this outbreak.
The Washington State Department of Health has information on ways to prevent the spread of the virus here.
Be thoughtful toward older friends and family and those who have a chronic illness, like diabetes, heart and lung disease, or asthma. A coronavirus infection can be particularly dangerous for them.
As a community, there are regular, CDC-recommended preventative measures we can all take to help contain the spread:
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
You can also call your county's public health centers at the phone number below.
• King County: (206) 477-3977
• Snohomish County: (425) 339-5200
• Skagit County: (360) 416-1500
• Whatcom County: (360) 778-6000
I will continue to do everything I can to provide resources to Washington State and across the country to combat the coronavirus and will keep you updated.
Thank you,
Suzan DelBene
