Hi John,

Today, we honor the brave Americans who have stepped up to serve our nation in the armed forces in defense of our country’s most sacred principles: Freedom, unity, democracy, and liberty and justice for all.

While we honor and thank our veterans today, there is so much more that must be done to support those returning home from service. War leaves veterans with scars – both visible and invisible. The difficulty of transitioning back into civilian life means that a high number of our service members grapple with mental health issues, substance use disorders, homelessness, and high rates of suicide – often without the support they need to navigate these challenges.

I want you to know that I’m not just committed to thanking those who’ve served: I’m committed to fighting for bills to expand mental health care, help veterans re-enter the workforce, invest in the VA, and fight the stigma of homelessness and substance use disorders that harms veterans in their re-entry to civilian life. They deserve nothing less than all of this – and then some.

Every day, but especially today, I sincerely thank all military members and their families for their service and sacrifice – for Vermont and for our country. And if you or someone you know is struggling or could use support, I urge you to call the Veterans Crisis Line at 988, then press 1.

Thank you,

Becca Balint
