Happy Veterans Day, folks.

Friend, today is Veterans Day, and I want to take a moment to recognize the service of thousands of Americans in our armed forces, and their loved ones.

Protecting our country takes immense sacrifice and devotion to our nation, and I, along with so many others, are eternally grateful for that sacrifice.

On solemn days like today, I’m choosing to honor the memory of Air Force Medic Jennifer Kepner, who died of pancreatic cancer as a result of her exposure to toxic burn pits in Iraq.

Like many others like her, Jennifer was lied to about the true roots of her cancer, and was left to navigate her disease without the full weight and support of the government by her side.

Quite frankly, the way veterans like Jennifer had been treated was horrifying. They ran towards the call of duty, but were left to suffer when they returned.

I gave her my word, before she died, that I would make it my mission in Congress to push the government to acknowledge the damage these toxic burn pits had caused, and make sure that Veterans like Jennifer and their families would have the support they deserved.

It took years for that mission to be achieved. But thanks in no small part to the stories of Jennifer and other Veterans in the Coachella Valley, the PACT Act was signed into law last year allowing for crucial health care benefits and disability payments to help alleviate the suffering of heroes like Jennifer.

So today, I hope you will take a moment to honor Jennifer and other heroes like her. I’ll be keeping her children and her husband Ben in my thoughts today.

To our veterans in California and beyond — I deeply thank you for your service to our country. And I’ll never stop fighting for you in the halls of Congress. No matter what.

Thank you,

Dr. Raul Ruiz
