Recognizing Our Hmong Community

Did you know that Wisconsin has the third-highest Hmong population of any state? I am fortunate to have so many Hmong friends in the Sixth District, and am grateful they have taught me so much about their rich history and wonderful culture.

I am very excited to share that I introduced a bipartisan resolution to recognize the cultural and historical significance of the Hmong New Year. I am glad that both sides of the aisle have come together to recognize Hmong Americans’ significant role in our communities and their pursuit of the American Dream.

The Hmong New Year is traditionally celebrated at the end of the rice harvest season in Laos and Southeast Asia in late November and early December. This celebration provides the Hmong people an opportunity to honor their ancestors and give thanks for the harvest. In the United States, the Hmong New Year traditions have carried over, occurring from October through December.

I always enjoy attending the New Year celebrations in the Sixth District and look forward to attending them again this year in both Oshkosh and Sheboygan. These celebrations of thanksgiving are an honor to attend – the food, music, and dance make these truly special events.

Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, Americans come together in unity to recognize the tremendous service and sacrifice America's vets made to our country. The United States is blessed to have the world’s best servicemen and women defending our freedoms, and Veterans Day is a reminder of the respect and gratitude we owe them for their service.

As your Representative, ensuring the support of our nation's veterans and increasing efficiency within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been a priority of mine. Earlier this year, I cosponsored the GUARD VA Act, which will establish criminal penalties for nefarious, unaccredited claim representatives who charge unauthorized fees to veterans looking for assistance. The targeting of veterans to rob them of their benefits is unethical and wrong, and this bill will help put an end to it. Additionally, I am a cosponsor of the Veteran Care Improvement Act, which will expedite the timeliness of care for veterans in need of assistance for substance abuse.

Our veterans have dedicated their lives to defending our freedom and safeguarding our nation's values, and it is our duty to ensure that they receive the recognition, support, and care they deserve. It is essential that we honor and respect their sacrifices not only on Veterans Day, but every day of the year.

Highlighting the Border Crisis

By removing protocols put in place by the prior Administration that empowered Border Patrol and strengthened border security, President Biden and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas have created the worst immigration crisis in our nation's history.

The numbers don't lie. Throughout Fiscal Year 2023, Border Patrol stopped over 2.4 million illegal migrants at the Southern border, which is an all-time single-year high. In the next week or two, we will learn how many immigrants crossed the border illegally in October. All signs point to another month of more than 200,000 apprehensions of illegal migrants, as that was the monthly average during FY23.

Our porous border is an invitation for criminals, terrorists, and adversaries to enter America uncontested. With continued unrest in the Middle East, the national security liability that is our Southern border is even more concerning. By refusing to enforce border security, President Biden is encouraging illegal immigration, which has endangered our communities.

Weekly Roundup

Thank you to Fond du Lac Christian School for having me at your annual live auction and dinner.

On Friday, we celebrated the 248th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. I am grateful to all our retired, active duty and fallen Marines for your service, sacrifice and dedication to our great country.

It was great attending the Fond du Lac Craft Show and supporting local businesses on the Fond du Lac Fairgrounds.

I am grateful for the efforts of the Campbellsport Fire Department to protect our community and loved ones during times of need. Thank you for having me at your Auxiliary Soup Sampler event in Campbellsport last weekend.

Last weekend, I had a great time with the Lomira-Theresa Legion at their baseball breakfast fundraiser in Theresa.
