Having worked alongside the U.S. military for years, Veteran’s Day is an important day for me. It’s a day for us to acknowledge the men and women, past and present, who have served our country in the armed forces.
As someone who worked alongside this great institution my whole career, and eventually served as an Assistant Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon, I want to tell you what it means to me. Most importantly, the military teaches personal leadership and putting mission before yourself. These values imbue almost everything in the military, and serve that veteran for the rest of their lives. They are the lessons that, frankly, a lot of Americans could use right now.
People take for granted that we can wake up and walk across the street, we can sit on our couch and hang out, that we can enjoy our families. We can live the life we want to live because someone is protecting us – and today is a day to show our gratitude for all who have stepped up to do just that.
I believe that service is the greatest love letter you can offer our country. Thank you today to all the active duty, Guard, Reservist veterans. You help us remember what today is all about.
