John –

Today, we think of the brave men and women who have served our country in the armed forces. It's their heroism that has allowed us to exercise our rights and freedoms at home.

Their sacrifices and selflessness deserve our highest commendation.

I'm also thinking of my great-great-grandfather, Robert Smalls, who served in the Navy. Born into slavery, he later became a pilot on a Confederate ship – Planter – and steered enslaved people to freedom, disguising himself as a Confederate captain.

After traveling north, he surrendered the ship to the Union Navy. This act would not only earn his freedom, but other Black soldiers and their families aboard the Planter .

He later served our country as a Congressman here in South Carolina.

We are forever in debt for the service of our Veterans, and I couldn't be prouder that my family shares in the tradition of service to our country.

It's important that we honor them with the benefits they deserve – from quality healthcare to affordable housing. It is the least we can do to show our appreciation.

Wishing you a reflective Veterans Day,

Michael B. Moore
