GLAAD
Friend, did you know that the percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive films grew by 50% over the last decade?
Thank you.
This incredible feat would not have been possible without supporters like you. The stories told in these films are an inextricable part of the culture-shift seen and experienced by LGBTQ people in recent years. More people are empowered to live openly and authentically than ever before.
But how do we know that LGBTQ inclusivity in films increased over the years?
The Vito Russo Test. Inspired by the Bechdel Test, GLAAD developed the Vito Russo Test to analyze how LGBTQ characters are included in films. Now in its eleventh year, the Vito Russo Test has helped filmmakers create more multidimensional characters while providing a barometer for LGBTQ film representation.
A film must achieve four benchmarks to pass the Vito Russo Test. Friend, can you guess which of the following benchmarks is false? Select one answer below:
A. The film contains a character that is identifiably lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer
B. That character must not be solely or predominantly defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity
C. The LGBTQ character in the film cannot be a villain and/or antagonist
D. The LGBTQ character’s story must avoid defaulting to well-known tropes or stereotypes with no further development
Over the past ten years, we've seen considerable strides toward representation thanks to supporters like you. As we look to the next decade, GLAAD demands that Hollywood deepen its work by investing in talent and resources to improve inclusive storytelling and marketing, as well as ensuring studio distributors use the power of their brand and platform to stand as an ally against discrimination and hate.
Thank you for making this work possible. Together, we will achieve 100% LGBTQ acceptance.
