John,

Veterans Day is a deeply personal time of reflection for me. Growing up, I proudly watched my father don his Air Force uniform each day, and felt a sense of pride knowing he was serving something greater than himself. The legacy of military service runs deep within my family – I am the descendant of a long line of veterans dating back to the Civil War.

The twentieth-century military lineage begins with my great-grandfather, who left his Allendale farm to serve in World War I. A generation later, his son volunteered to serve in a segregated US Army unit during World War II.

I grew up knowing that people like my father — and the generations of service members in my family — who took the oath to support and defend the Constitution did so at great sacrifice. I took this oath when I made the decision to follow in my father’s footsteps of service, sacrifice, and patriotism, having earned a congressional appointment to the United States Air Force Academy.

I look back at my time in the Academy with great fondness and appreciation. We were 1,362 basic cadets preparing for a future of service for the greater good. We answered our nation's call to continue a tradition of honor and a legacy of valor. Integrity. Excellence. Service.

Like it did to my father’s life, the Air Force changed the trajectory of mine. After four years at the Academy, I spent an additional six years on active duty, where I was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in year two and to Captain in year four. But then, I felt a new calling to serve – this time as a doctor for my community.

My time as a trauma surgeon didn’t separate me from the world of the armed forces. In fact, it only brought to light the massive challenges our veterans face during active service and when they came home — especially in the field of healthcare. No veteran should be without the healthcare, mental health services, or economic resources they need to thrive.

Too often, poor policies and decisions from Washington end up harming the very people who have dedicated their lives to protecting our nation. And that’s one of the main reasons I chose to run for Congress — I am answering the call to help ensure my fellow veterans have the support they deserve. It’s time for action.

Today, I hope you will thank a veteran in your life. If you are a veteran as well, I express my deepest gratitude for your service. Let us all stand shoulder to shoulder to ensure those who have served our country can enjoy its freedoms when they come home.

Have a safe and meaningful Veterans Day!

Onward,

Dr. Brian Williams
