THIS WEEK’S PODCAST

We Regret to Inform You

Bruce Praet is a well-known name in law enforcement, especially across California. He co-founded a company called Lexipol, which contracts with more than 95% of police departments in the state – and offers a startling piece of advice.

Praet’s guidance for police departments in the wake of a police shooting focuses on liability. When officers go to notify the family, Praet has said, they should use it as an opportunity to find the “evasive truth.” In other words, get as much information from families as possible before sharing that their loved one has been killed.

This week on Reveal, reporter Brian Howey connects with families who have been on the receiving end of this controversial policing tactic.

A Quote to Remember

“I pushed so hard for a $653 check, for 40 hours a week.”

Quanesa Simpson and her family were living on $653 a month in cash assistance. But to keep the welfare support, she had to get “work experience” – and work up to 40 hours a week, for free, through a for-profit company that was making money off her hardship.
