Podcast: MFC Leaders Discuss Sobering Election Results

We saw some losses this week in elections across the country. John Helmberger (MFC CEO) and Jeff Evans (incoming MFC CEO) join Grace on the podcast to discuss the disappointing election results and consider what it means for the pro-life movement going forward. John shares that the law is a moral teacher and how that applies to the abortion debate. Jeff explains how we as pro-life Christians can winsomely act with courage, faithfulness, and shrewdness. Then, Grace, John, and Jeff break down what happened in Ohio and Virginia, share what went wrong, and what we can learn as we seek to build a culture of life in Minnesota.

Election WINS in Minnesota School Board Races!

We’re happy to announce several victories in Minnesota school board races this week! We sent out targeted emails to key districts and are grateful to see that our efforts, alongside our allies at the Minnesota Parents Alliance (MPA), paid off. Strong candidates won seats in two of the three school districts that we targeted with emails and MPA targeted with significant resources such as direct mail, digital advertising, and door knocking.

MPA shared in a recent email: “Parent-backed candidates won in Anoka-Hennepin, the state’s largest school district and Hastings, where they now have a 5-2 majority. MPA also celebrated victories in South Washington County, Minnetonka, Spring Lake Park, Hopkins, and Wayzata. The wins in 2023 build on the successes of 2022 when fifty candidates running with the official MPA endorsement won election to the school board and MPA won seats in 15 of 19 targeted districts.”

We’re grateful for our allies at MPA and to see strong candidates elected that will support parental rights and fight indoctrination in our public schools!

In the long term, the pro-life movement needs to change many more hearts and minds of Americans to win a long-lasting victory across the country. Such change will likely involve seeking incremental gains and prudent legislative compromises. It is telling that a large percentage of abortion stories in the mainstream media focus on the very small percentage of hard cases involving rape, incest, or fatal fetal-health conditions. It is also essential that pro-life officials everywhere counter the lies of the abortion-industrial complex that hospitals may need to delay treatment of conditions that threaten the life of the mother due to pro-life laws. No law requires waiting until such a threat becomes imminent to act. There has been some progress in countering such misinformation, but there is more work to be done.

It’s hard to predict the future or how long this fight will last. Advocates of same-sex marriage suffered a string of 32 losses at the ballot box before succeeding for the first time, in the bluest of states, in 2012. We disagreed with their objective, and both sides are more entrenched on the abortion issue, but their success serves as a reminder that a string of defeats at the ballot box is no reason to believe a cause is lost.

The pro-life cause will ultimately succeed in this country only when many more Americans truly appreciate the dignity of every human person. It will succeed when many more Americans understand that voluntarily targeting the weakest among us for death is always wrong, and when they know that such killing is never necessary because there are resources to support pregnant women and that adoption is always a positive alternative to abortion. In other words, it will succeed when many more Americans see that life is always better than death.

Despite going up against one of the most powerful political organizations in the state, Minnesota Parents Alliance-backed school board candidates still claimed key victories in Tuesday night’s elections.

Minnesota Parents Alliance (MPA) caught Education Minnesota off guard last election cycle, according to Cristine Trooien, executive director of MPA. MPA-backed candidates won 49 school board seats statewide in 2022.

“They were ready for us this time, and we still won seats in key districts,” she said.

MPA-backed candidates won two of the three available seats in Anoka-Hennepin, the largest district in the state, flipped the board in Hastings where conservatives now hold a 5-2 majority, and claimed seats in South Washington County, Minnetonka, Spring Lake Park, Hopkins, and Wayzata.
