Our people are dying and our communities are suffering, Johh. Last month, a man in Lewiston, Maine murdered eighteen people and forever changed the lives of thirteen others with an assault weapon. In just this year, there have been over 550 mass shootings in the United States.
But instead of using his new position as Speaker of the House to make a difference and pass gun safety legislation, Mike Johnson has made it clear that he plans to do
nothing. In the past, this man has blamed school shootings on abortion and has the full support of the NRA.
This is unacceptable.
Diana believes that one very important step our country can take to reduce gun violence and save lives is to pass an assault weapons ban. The fact is that there is no legitimate reason why civilians in this country need a gun that holds 30, 60, or 100 rounds. Research shows that shootings involving a high-capacity magazine – which allows a shooter to fire dozens of rounds without having to stop and reload – led to five times as many people being shot.
Created to be used on the battlefield with immediate reload capabilities, assault rifles have been the source of multiple mass shootings and
literally tear people's bodies apart on impact.
That's why Diana has consistently pushed for an assault weapons ban. By passing these critical laws, we can get weapons of war off our streets and save lives. It's time to come together to prevent these tragedies from occurring and curb the scourge of gun violence that's devastating our communities.
