What makes him more palatable to moderate Republicans who voted for him is his mild demeanor and low profile. But make no mistake, Mike Johnson is as right-wing as you get in the GOP, and that's a high bar these days.

Johnson's views align with Republican extremism, not the American public, particularly on issues such as abortion access, LGBTQ+ rights and secular governance. His stance on these matters is not just a political position; it is a direct challenge to the democratic values that our nation stands for.

As an attorney for the right-wing Alliance Defending Freedom, he supported anti-sodomy laws and called gay people a "deviant group." He believes a separation of church and state is "the opposite of how we were founded as a country," distorting the words of Thomas Jefferson. He has argued that we do not live in a democracy but that, instead, we live in a "biblical republic." Johnson, an anti-abortion extremist, has claimed Americans have no right to an abortion and would certainly strip our reproductive freedoms given the chance.

The House GOP must be held accountable for picking a far-right extremist. As Trump runs again for president and House Republicans try to keep their narrow majority, every single Republican must answer for the extreme views of their new leader, Mike Johnson.
