Dear John,

I want to wish a Happy Veterans Day to all that have served our nation.

Our nation remembers your service and sacrifice on behalf of American democracy and the ideals of freedom and equality on this Veterans Day.

Mark Takano Speaking to a Group of Veterans

I wanted to share with you some legislative efforts I have brought to the floor, passed, and will continue to fight for on behalf of former servicemembers:

PACT Act to Provide Veteran Relief and Provide Toxic Exposure-Related Benefits

Last year, as the Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, I had the privilege of leading the passage of the Honoring our PACT Act.

Since Congress passed and President Biden signed my PACT Act, VA has delivered more than $2.46 billion in PACT Act benefits to veterans. All eligible veterans and survivors can file a claim — or submit their intent to file a claim — for PACT Act-related benefits now.

Visit VA.gov/PACT for more information. If you have any questions about the filing process or if you qualify for PACT Act benefits, please reach out to my office for assistance by calling 951-222-0203.

Korean American VALOR Act to Provide Benefits to Korean American Veterans

Additionally, I am proud to have introduced and passed the Korean American VALOR Act in both the House and Senate. This bill is currently on the way to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law. The VALOR Act will create a pathway for Korean American Vietnam veterans who fought alongside American forces to receive the VA healthcare and benefits they have earned, like many other allies currently receive

Guard Act to Protect Predatory Attacks on Veterans Filing for Benefits

I also had the honor of standing alongside my colleague Representative Chris Pappas in reintroducing the GUARD Act. This act would protect veterans’ benefits from predatory claim sharks and reinstate criminal penalties for those charge unauthorized fees while assisting veterans filing for VA disability benefits.

The Healthy Foundations for Homeless Veterans Act and Elizabeth Dole HOME Care Act

As we approach the winter season, action to address the veteran homelessness epidemic is crucial and needs to be taken as soon as possible. For months, I have been calling up the Speaker of the House to bring the Healthy Foundations for Homeless Veterans Act to the floor. This act would provide housing for the thousands of veterans experiencing homelessness in the United States by permanently authorize the use of certain funds to assist veterans in need. Inaction by the majority is impacting VA's work to house homeless veterans.

The Elizabeth Dole HOME Care Act is a bicameral and bipartisan bill that represents some of the excellent work we can do on behalf of veterans when we work together and find common ground. It will expand access to a variety of VA programs for elderly and disabled veterans, enabling them to remain at home, safely age in place, and avoid or delay admission to nursing homes and other costly institutional settings of care. This landmark legislation is championed by our Health Subcommittee Ranking Member, Julia Brownley, and it is imperative that the House votes on these pieces of legislation to ensure housing of veterans ahead of extreme weather conditions.

Time is of the essence for veterans and their caregivers, and I will continue to fight relentlessly to push for permanent housing for veterans.

Sincerely,

Rep. Mark Takano signature
