The New York Times quotes PCCC co-founder Adam Green on Joe Manchin not running for re-election:

"Joe Manchin watered down the Democratic economic agenda, made the cost of raising children higher and billionaire taxes lower, and now doesn’t even run for re-election," said Adam Green, a founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. "History, and West Virginians who are struggling, will not judge Joe Manchin well."

Running for re-election in West Virginia was the excuse Manchin gave for doing SO MUCH DAMAGE. And now, with democracy under siege, Manchin just gave up a Democratic Senate seat. Manchin's decision forces us all to work even harder to keep the Senate in safe hands in 2024.

Politico reports that Mitch McConnell was involved.

"Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans worked for more than a year to make Joe Manchin’s retirement announcement on Thursday a reality. And for good reason: The Democrat’s decision puts Republicans on the precipice of a majority that’s eluded them for two straight election cycles."

Politico also lays out the stakes:

"Democrats will need a near-perfect performance next year to keep Republicans from regaining control of the chamber. The Senate GOP needs to pick up only one more seat -- or none at all, if Republicans win the presidency and claim the vice presidential tie-breaker.

"The map is not in Democrats’ favor. There’s almost no chance they hold West Virginia now. That means Sens. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) will have to hold the line in difficult territory."

There are 5 absolutely must-win Senate races. Lucas Kunce (Missouri) is our best shot to EXPAND our Senate map. Ruben Gallego (Arizona) must defeat Manchin's buddy Kyrsten Sinema and fend off Republican Kari Lake. And Tammy Baldwin (Wisconsin), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), and Jon Tester (Montana) ALL must win re-election in states that now range from purple to red.
