BIG news in the Michigan Senate race: Former U.S. Representative Peter Meijer, Republican from Grand Rapids, has officially entered the race.
Meijer, of the well-known Michigan-based Meijer Grocery Store family, self-funded his previous races for Congress to the tune of $1.6 million and has the ability to self-fund even more in this Senate race.

This means the Republican primary just got more crowded: Meijer is the third credible candidate to enter in the past 8 weeks, joining former Congressman Mike Rogers and former Detroit Chief of Police James Craig. It’s clear this three-way battle will pull the field to the most extreme elements in the GOP: We have already witnessed Rogers selling out his former colleagues at the FBI (in week two of the race) to earn Donald Trump and his supporters’ votes, and seen James Craig go on Steve Bannon’s podcast in the hope of currying Trump’s endorsement. We should expect Peter Meijer to similarly make healthy nods to the extreme base of the party to have a chance in the primary in August.
While many will remember Peter for his early vote to impeach Trump in 2020, the reality is that he spent the next two years making up for that impeachment vote by taking extreme positions well outside of the mainstream in Michigan. Here on Team Slotkin, we do our homework, and here’s what you should know about Peter Meijer’s record and where he stands on the issues:
He has said publicly that he supports a federal ban on abortion and has campaigned on being “100% pro-life” – even in cases of rape or incest. Meijer voted against legislation that would ensure women have better access to contraceptives.
Meijer is from one of the wealthiest families in America, one of the 9 billionaire families in Michigan, so it is no surprise that he also supports tax cuts for the rich – including publicly supporting the 2017 Trump tax law which was the largest giveaway to the ultra-wealthy and richest corporations in our country’s history.
Not surprisingly, during his campaigns for Congress, he took over $100,000 from the DeVos family, likely because he supports their crusade to destroy public education in America — and for his support for Trump’s tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.
This is a big moment of inflection in the campaign. We have the full range of voices in the Republican Party — so it’s time for our campaign to show we have what it takes to compete and win in Michigan, and it’s why we’re asking for your support to continue building the kind of campaign we’ll need to WIN.
