As today marks the 248th birthday of the Marine Corps and with Veterans Day less than 24 hours away, I wanted to take a moment and share why these holidays are so important to me.

I’ve talked a lot about my big family — but just in case you didn’t know, I’m the oldest of five kids, and my parents did what they could to make ends meet throughout our childhood. As the eldest, I always felt a special sense of pride whenever my younger siblings went out to achieve their dreams and give back to our community.

So when two of my brothers — Cory and Logan — decided to serve our country in the United States Marines (Ooh-Rah!), I was so proud of them.

Cory served for 6 years, and Logan served for 8 years, each completing multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and risking their lives to ensure our safety at home. However, my family’s tradition of serving our country didn’t begin with my courageous younger brothers.

My Paw Paw, Dr. Wallace “Wally” Guess, served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He completed over two years of service and left the Army as a Sergeant. What’s more, he didn’t stop his service to the people there — he went on to become the Dean at Ole Miss School of Pharmacy for 18 years and he was a well-loved leader by all who knew him. When it comes to giving back, it runs in the family.

The sacrifice given by my Paw Paw and my brothers is something I don’t take lightly — which is why as your next Attorney General, I’ll fight to protect veterans and everyday Louisianans from predatory bad actors and corporations who prioritize profits over the people.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about what this Veteran’s Day means to me, and for supporting my historic campaign to be Louisiana’s next AG.
