Republicans officially elected their new Speaker a couple of weeks ago, Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson. Since his election, horrifying news has come out about this relatively unknown Rep.
Before his political career, Johnson was involved with a conversion therapy group that claimed they could turn gay people straight. He claimed that the fall of the Roman Empire was due to “rampant homosexual behavior.” He’s blamed school shootings on teaching evolution and abortion. He helped write a legal brief to try to get the U.S. Supreme Court to throw out electors from states that Donald Trump didn’t win. If we thought that Kevin McCarty was bad, Mike Johnson is much worse.
At this point, strong Democrats who refuse to compromise on their values are the only thing standing between Johnson’s dangerous, extremist rhetoric and even more dangerous policy. Here in Illinois, we need to support our congressional delegation who fight every day for the values that matter.
