Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has criticised the King’s Speech, arguing it is symbolic of a government that has run out of ideas.

The King’s Speech is a speech written by the Government and delivered by the monarch, this being the first by a King since 1951, at the start of each parliamentary session, generally lasting a year.

In these speeches, the Government sets out the laws that they intend to introduce during that session, with this speech expected to be the last before the next general election.

Gwynne said: “Whilst I welcome the Prime Minister admitting the country needs to change, the idea that another five years of Conservative rule is the answer simply will not wash.

“After thirteen years, they have given up on governing, with residents in Tameside and Stockport paying the price.

“We have been saddled with stagnant growth, sky-rocketing mortgages, crumbling schools and hospitals, and a cost-of-living crisis, which this threadbare King’s Speech will do nothing to fix.

“The next election is about change, and this King’s Speech showed us that the only party offering it is Labour.”

The civilian catastrophe in Gaza is horrific. I call for the cycle of violence and killing of innocent civilians to stop.

I also ask the Minister by when he expects the Prime Minister’s promise for getting hundreds of vehicles of aid a day into Gaza will happen.

This week I laid a Poppy cross in Parliament's Garden of Remembrance on behalf of Denton & Reddish.

I dedicated it to our two VC recipients: Albert Hill (Denton) & Joseph Lister (Reddish) and Lance Corporal Andrew Breeze who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.

REMEMBRANCE IN DENTON

On Monday, I joined Cllr Gwynne and Cllr Reid in putting up hand made poppies around Denton town centre, it's amazing what you can do with a bit of red and black plastic and a fondness for Blue Peter DIY!

It hopefully adds a little bit of Remembrance pride around the town ahead of Sunday’s parade and service.

POPLAR STREET PRIMARY MEMORIAL GARDEN

This morning I was at Poplar Street Primary School in Audenshaw to cut the ribbon and officially open the new memorial garden dedicated to two former members of staff, Sue Chesters and Leanne Ray, who sadly passed away in 2021 and 2022.

It’s a beautiful tribute to them.

UK Parliament Week at St Anne's Primary

This afternoon I attended a fantastic UK Parliament Week event with Yrs 5 and 6 at St Anne’s Primary School in Denton.

Lots covered from Guy Fawkes, swords, the King’s Speech, laws, elections, political parties and, with Cllr Gwynne, the difference between local and national government.

Anti-social behaviour blights lives.

Persistent offending has a serious impact, making people feel unsafe in their own homes.

After neighbourhood policing has faced years of cutbacks, communities in Tameside and across the country are paying the price.

It should not be too much to ask that when something goes wrong, people can rely on someone turning up, with criminals facing the consequences of their actions.

But when it comes to community safety and tackling anti-social behaviour, too many people are having to put up with second best.

The lack of a visible policing presence is of real concern, with recent data showing that Community Support Officers in the North-West, a vital tool to tackle local anti-social behaviour, have been cut by 47% since 2015 with 2,300 fewer officers on our streets.

These problems are persistent across the system, with victims waiting years for justice because of backlogs in the courts, meaning too many crimes go unpunished.

The failure to tackle these issues, has meant that the basic right of safety and security in your home and community is not being met for millions of people.

It’s why I’m proud to back Labour’s new community policing guarantee, putting power back into the hands of local people.

A guarantee that will put police on the beat again, giving every community a named officer they can get in touch with.

There will be zero-tolerance of anti-social behaviour, giving police new powers to ban repeat offenders from town centres, and tackle public drink and drug use, with every local area having a dedicated anti-social behaviour lead.

Crucially, communities will be put back at the heart of policing, giving residents and businesses a say in how their areas are policed and ensuring police work with them on deciding local priorities.

It is only by delivering change on this scale, that we can ensure people across Tameside are safe in the knowledge that crime is being tackled and their concerns are being heard.

This is a change that is long overdue, with communities having been made to suffer for too long under a Conservative Party that has failed to take crime and anti-social behaviour seriously.

The next Labour government will be driven by the mission to take back our streets, giving police the resources, and local communities the voice, to say enough is enough.
