This week, Labour set out its plan to bring down energy bills for British families after the Tories admitted they have no plans to do so. It’s shocking that despite British families suffering the worst cost of living crisis in generations, there are no measures in the King’s Speech that will take practical action to bring down bills. The Conservatives are so out of touch that they have given up trying to bring down energy bills for British families and make Britain energy independent. I've had so many constituents reach out to me concerned about sky high bills and the cost of living. That's why, in government, Labour will introduce an Energy Independence Act as part of our plan to make Britain a clean energy superpower. We will switch on Great British Energy, a new home-grown, publicly-owned champion in clean energy generation, which will take up to £1,400 off the annual household bill and £53 billion off energy bills for businesses by 2030.

Save the Children

This week, it was great to attend the Save the Children Remittance Campaign Launch. Diaspora communities do incredible work supporting their friends and families abroad. Last year diaspora communities across the UK sent over 8 billion pounds of their earnings as remittances to family and their communities abroad. That is more than the current overseas aid budget. Reducing the costs associated with sending money overseas is something I worked on in my role as Shadow Secretary of State for International Development. Labour has set the goal of reducing the obstacles to remitting, keeping money in the pockets of Britain’s communities and allowing them to build on their contribution to Britain’s impact in the world.

Delivering Integrated Healthcare Seminar

This week, it was great to speak at the Delivering Integrated Healthcare Seminar. After 13 years of Conservatives in power, the NHS is flat on its back. 1 in 7 of us are stuck on waiting lists, improvements in healthy life expectancy are stalling, around 2.6 million people of working age are out of work and long-term sick – a record high. Labour will improve the public’s health. We will take tough action on companies seeking to exploit our children’s health for profit, push for a smokefree future, and our Children’s Health Plan, with free breakfast clubs in every primary school, will make sure every child gets a healthy start to the day.

St Peter's Primary School Climate Visit

This week, it was wonderful to visit the "Creative for Climate Justice" exhibition at St Peter's CE Primary School today. I was so impressed by all the different works of art on display and to see so many students committed to climate justice.

BCU Welcome Dinner

This week, it was lovely to attend Professor David Mba’s welcome dinner to celebrate his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Birmingham City University. I look forward to working with Professor Mba and the University in the future.

This week, it was great to see Human Appeal collecting coats and donations to help keep vulnerable people warm this winter. If you have a spare coat, you can drop it off at Edgbaston Community Centre, 40 Woodview Dr, B15 2HU, Monday – Thursday between 10.00am-4.00pm.

Golden Lion Inn This week, Historic England has announced that it plans to bring the long-derelict Golden Lion Inn in Cannon Hill Park back into use. You can submit any memories or photographs of Cannon Hill Park and the Golden Lion Inn you might have here:

MHRC Next Monday, 13th November, the MHRC will be visiting Lye Avenue, Bartley Green, B32 3UE. The centre will be open between 7am and 12:30pm, so please come along if you're local and have bulky household waste to dispose of.
