Message from National NOW President Christian F. Nunes
November 10, 2023
Greetings Feminists,
It’s no secret that voter suppression is at an all-time high, and as an organization, NOW is committed to advancing voting rights for all. Women are disproportionately affected by voter suppression, and when you factor in intersecting and overlapping social identities, young women, women of color, LGBTQIA+ women, and older women are directly targeted.
Voting is an essential part of our democracy, and when barriers are put in place to limit our freedoms, that paints a bleak image of our current reality. NOW is proud to support legislation aimed at combatting sweeping voter restrictions, such as the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. Both pieces of legislation would protect our right to vote and set national standards for equal access to the ballot.
With widespread racial and partisan gerrymandering, voter ID laws, and election subversion, this discriminatory pattern must end. Our vote is our voice, and we must use it to advance equity and justice for all. That was made clear on Tuesday, November 7 when women came out and used our voices to defend our rights at the ballot box. With massive wins in Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia, all of us made it clear that attempts to regulate and control our bodily autonomy will not triumph. Abortion bans do nothing to protect anyone’s safety. We will continue to demand our right to freely make our own decisions.
In solidarity,
Christian
