A LOT has happened the last eight weeks in the Michigan Senate race. So to keep you up to date, we wanted to lay out our big updates in regards to our Republican opponents. There are actually 10 in the primary, and the leading candidates and their attacks mirror the chaos we’ve seen from the national GOP.
FIRST: In early September, Republican former Congressman Mike Rogers got in the race. Mike has tried to paint himself as a moderate, but in his first two weeks in the race, he, as a former FBI officer, put out a video – attacking the FBI, calling them “corrupt” for going after Trump. He’s catering to the extremes of the Republican base because he will do and say anything to get elected, even at the expense of Michiganders.
THEN: James Craig, a Republican former Detroit Police Chief and the most Trump-aligned potential candidate, has jumped into the race. He called for an audit of the 2020 election results, is against any additional gun safety laws, and opposes all abortion, including for victims of rape and incest. In the last few weeks, he has been a regular on Steve Bannon and conservative radio and talk shows promoting his campaign and attacking Elissa.
NOW: Another new opponent – former Representative Peter Meijer – has entered the growing Republican primary. Despite his very public vote to impeach Trump, Meijer will spend the next year working to win over the GOP base by defending Trump and highlighting the extreme votes he took during his one term in Congress. On top of that, he has the ability to self-fund millions of dollars – making this race even more expensive.
So here’s where we’re at:
In response to these three new opponents and the fighting ensuing among them, we plan to share our positive, affirmative message about Elissa with voters across Michigan in order to combat the inevitable negative attacks from whoever our eventual Republican opponent is.
But that takes resources. That’s why we’re asking for your help.
If everyone reading this email contributed just $10, we’d be able to continue building the early foundation we need to ensure success down the line. It all adds up, and the important thing is that you're in it with Elissa today. So, please contribute any amount you can today.
