Hi John,

Last month we had a major step forward in the campaign against the climate-wrecking Energy Charter Treaty. The government announced it was reviewing the UK’s membership of the deal, which lets fossil fuel companies seek massive payouts from necessary climate action.

Now we need to step up the pressure ahead of the deadline they set a meeting of the treaty’s member countries on 20 November, where flawed ‘modernisation’ plans are set to fail yet again. The government said it would “consider leaving” if the reforms were not passed “by November” – so when this happens we need to make sure they finally join the exodus from this treaty.(1)

To help build the pressure we’re handing in our almost 120,000-strong petition to exit the ECT to No 10 Downing Street on 17 November, a few days before the crucial treaty meeting. John, can you make sure you’ve added your name ahead of the hand-in?

Sign the petition now to make sure your voice is heard, and be part of the final push ahead of this critical moment.
Take action
In a recent response to their own Climate Change Committee’s recommendation to exit the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), the government itself conceded “there is now no clear route for modernisation to progress”.(2)

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the longer we keep ourselves bound to the fossil fuel industry’s secret weapon, the more likely they are to use it against the climate action we need.

Three new ECT cases have just been lodged against Denmark, Germany and the EU, by a UK company over two oil refineries.(3) The conglomerate, Klesch Group, is ultimately incorporated in secrecy jurisdiction Malta and chaired by an infamous US vulture capitalist – and is apparently suing, in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, over the windfall tax on energy companies. We make polluters pay, they demand a pay-out.

We need to get the UK out of the ECT as soon as possible, if not just to protect our own climate action, but to stop the UK harbouring the corporate pirates who can block it elsewhere and squirrel away their winnings in tax havens.

Please add your name to the petition now.
Take action
Already almost 120,000 of us have called for the UK to exit the ECT, and we look forward to showing No 10 just how many eyes are on them as the deadline passes to review the UK’s membership of this climate-wrecking deal.

In solidarity,
