Hi John,
The US Treasury and IRS are proposing new rules1 that could mandate financial mass surveillance. The deadline to submit a comment is this Monday, November 13. Take action and stand up for financial privacy today.
TAKE ACTION
This new rule is sneaky. On the surface, it looks all fine and dandy but after a deep dive, we, like other experts on this issue,2 realized that the government is forcing decentralized software developers and technologies to track and sell out their users’ data. They assume that anyone seeking financial privacy and anonymity is a tax cheat, money launderer, criminal, or terrorist. We know that’s not true. In today’s climate, privacy-protecting tools help people support their communities and causes they care about. This includes protestors, abuse survivors, and people around the globe with fewer freedoms.
Treasury and the IRS are trying to define a digital asset and who qualifies as a broker under the tax code. But by requiring anyone deemed a broker to collect, keep personally-identifiable information from users of their tools (including names, addresses and other financial information) and report that information to the IRS in the name of reducing tax avoidance, they are mandating surveillance by technologies that would otherwise not collect this information.
Time is running out with less than a week left to the November 13 deadline. We desperately need your help to drive home the message and halt the expansion of the surveillance machine. We’ve built a tool that makes contributing to this process as easy as the click of a button. Submit a comment before the deadline to protect yourself and others.
Thank you for fighting with us,
Ese at Fight for the Future
