Germany Remembers Kristallnacht

NBC: Across Germany, in schools, city halls, synagogues, churches and parliament, people were coming together Thursday to commemorate the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht — or the “Night of Broken Glass” — in which the Nazis terrorized Jews throughout Germany and Austria. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Germany’s main Jewish leader, Josef Schuster, were set to speak at an anniversary ceremony at a Berlin synagogue that was attacked with firebombs last month. On Nov. 9, 1938, the Nazis killed at least 91 people and vandalized 7,500 Jewish businesses. They also burned more than 1,400 synagogues, according to Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial. Up to 30,000 Jewish men were arrested, many of them taken to concentration camps such as Dachau or Buchenwald. Hundreds more committed suicide or died as a result of mistreatment in the camps years before official mass deportations began (NBC). Ted Deutch, CEO of American Jewish Committee: A truly moving sight. Tonight in Germany, on the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the words “Never Again is Now” are projected on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin (X).

Israel Agrees to a Brief Ceasefire to Allow Citizens of Gaza to Evacuate
Associated Press: Israel has agreed to put in place four-hour daily humanitarian pauses in its assault on Hamas in northern Gaza starting on Thursday, the White House said, as President Joe Biden pressed Israelis for a multi-day stoppage in the fighting in a bid to release hostages held by the militant group. Biden said Thursday that there was “no possibility” of a formal cease-fire at the moment, and said it had “taken a little longer” than he hoped for Israel to agree to the humanitarian pauses. Biden had asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to institute the daily pauses during a Monday call and said he had also asked the Israelis for a pause of at least three days to allow for negotiations over the release of some hostages held by Hamas (Associated Press). Wall Street Journal: As Israeli troops advanced deeper into Gaza City, Israel said 80,000 people fled from north to south Gaza on Thursday. The Israel Defense Forces said it had raided a Hamas military zone in Gaza it called the “heart of intelligence and operational activities.” CIA Director William Burns met Thursday with the heads of Qatar and Israel’s Mossad to discuss a possible deal to release some hostages (Wall Street Journal).

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) Announces He Will Not Run for Reelection
NBC: Centrist Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced Thursday he won’t run for re-election next year, a much anticipated decision that will reshape the battle for Senate control in 2024. The decision by Manchin, a former governor who was elected to the Senate in a 2010 special election, is an earthquake in the battle for the Senate majority. It all but assures Republicans a pickup in the ruby-red state of West Virginia, where Manchin has defied political gravity for years by keeping the seat in his party’s hands. Donald Trump won the state by 39 points in 2020 (NBC). Senator Joe Manchin: To the West Virginians who have put their trust in me and fought side by side to make our state better – it has been an honor of my life to serve you. Thank you. My statement on my political future (X). Senator Manchin: A genuine commitment to legislating would put America on firmer footing for the next 20 years. But the Democratic and Republican machines have no interest in solutions. Instead, they stoke outrage because doing so brings them fame and funding. Today, the business of politics is about monetizing anger and getting paid for it. And business has never been better. Not for me. After months of deliberation and long conversations with family, I believe I have accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia (Wall Street Journal).

Pro-Palestine Protesters Storm NY Times Building
Daily Mail: Masses of pro-Palestine protesters took to the streets of New York City and made their way to the New York Times building, criticizing their coverage of the war in Israel. On Thursday, demonstrators took over the lobby of the building, holding up Palestinian flags and a sign that said ‘Ceasefire now.’ They read off names of those killed in Gaza from a paper called ‘The New York Crimes’ (Daily Mail). Andy Ngo: Radical leftists have occupied the NYTimes office in Manhattan to protest their coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. They say the NYT is too biased in favor of Israel. The activists want Israel to be abolished & do not accept criticism of Palestinian terror (X).

CNN Distances Themselves from Journalist Who Was Close With Hamas Leaders
National Review: CNN cut ties with a freelance photojournalist based in Gaza hours after a photo emerged purportedly showing a top Hamas leader kissing the photographer on the cheek. Freelancer Hassan Eslaiah can be seen in the photo being friendly with Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the October 7 massacre that killed 1,400 Israelis. The photo came to light after HonestReporting, a pro-Israel media watchdog group, published a report Wednesday claiming Eslaiah and other photojournalists were embedded with Hamas terrorists on the day they attacked Israel last month (National Review). Honest Reporting: In the hours following our expose, new material is still coming to light concerning Gazan freelance journalist Hassan Eslaiah whom both AP & CNN used on Oct. 7. Here he is pictured with Hamas leader and mastermind of the Oct. 7 massacre, Yahya Sinwar (X). Yaari Cohen: Meet Hassan Eslaiah, a freelance journalist for CNN, Reuters, AP in this video he’s on a motorbike, with a grenade in his hand, on his way to the Massacre of innocents in Israel. Free Gaza From Hamas seems to be about Hamas journalists too (X).

Fights Ensue Between Palestine, Israel Supporters in Los Angeles After Screening of Movie Detailing October 7 Attacks
Fox News: Fights broke out between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian supporters in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, in front of a museum where a screening of a controversial movie about the October 7 Hamas attacks was taking place. The clashes erupted across the street from the Museum of Tolerance (MOT), a multimedia museum, where inside more than 150 people had gathered to watch “Bearing Witness,” a 47-minute film that was touted as featuring “extremely graphic and violent” footage documenting the attacks. Actress Gal Gadot, who previously served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), is understood to have helped organize the event but did not attend. However, her husband, Jaron Varsano, an Israeli film producer, was present (Fox News). ABC7: Two groups clash outside L.A.’s Museum of Tolerance as the center screens a film on Hamas atrocities. LAPD officers move in as several people appear to have been punched and pepper-sprayed (X). Visgrad24: Anti-Israel protesters are physically attacking Jews attending a screening of the Oct. 7th Hamas Massacre organized by actress Gal Gadot at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles (X).

Sorority Alumni Get Memberships Revoked for Standing Up for Current Students Protesting Admission of a Biological Male into Sorority
National Review: Kappa Kappa Gamma national headquarters kicked out two prominent alumni last week over alleged policy violations related to their advocacy on behalf of six female University of Wyoming students who sued the sorority after a man was admitted into their chapter. The organization terminated the membership of former Kappa Kappa Gamma national foundation president Patsy Levang and long-time member and active contributor Cheryl Tuck-Smith on October 29, the two women told National Review in an exclusive provided by the Independent Women’s Forum and the Independent Women’s Law Center. KKG accused the women of violating a host of policies by using the organization’s contact list to fundraise for the female students’ legal defense and by disparaging the sorority’s decision to admit a male student in various media interviews (National Review).

Chicago Mayor Pledges to Take in More Illegals, Gets Booed by Crowd
Guy Benson: Chicago’s new left-wing, pro-illegal immigration, criminal-apologist mayor recently chided his fellow Democrats in New York City for their increasingly dire rhetoric about illegal immigrants arriving in their jurisdiction.  Gov. Kathy Hochul used to talk about how these ‘migrants’ would be embraced by the warm, open arms of New York.  Now she’s telling them to go elsewhere.  Mayor Eric Adams thumped his chest about the Big Apple being a sanctuary city during the Trump years.  Now he’s warning that it’s overrun by migrants who are ‘destroying’ the city, and he’s offering them one-way plane tickets out of town.   Brandon Johnson has been watching this evolution with disgust, telling a news outlet an earlier this year that Chicago won’t engage in that sort of demagoguery, and won’t be “overwhelmed” by the crisis (Townhall). Guy Benson: Chicago’s Mayor pledged his city would welcome many more illegal immigrants. Chicago’s residents aren’t having it. “Shouts, tears, boos from crowd force recess of City Council committee meeting during heated migrant debate” (X).

Vatican States Trans People Can be Baptized, Be Godparents
Pope Francis keeps appealing to the LGBTQ crowd. Wall Street Journal: The Vatican said transgender people may be baptized as Catholics and can serve as godparents, in the latest sign of the church’s greater openness to LGBTQ people under Pope Francis. The Vatican also said that the children of gay couples, including ones who are adopted or born to surrogate mothers, may be baptized, and that such couples may serve as godparents (Wall Street Journal). Associated Press: A small but growing number of U.S. parishes have formed LGBTQ support groups and welcome transgender people on their own terms. Yet several Catholic dioceses have issued guidelines targeting trans people with restrictions and refusing to recognize their gender identity (Associated Press).

SAG-AFTRA Hollywood Strike Ends
Daily Wire: After 118 days, the SAG-AFTRA actors strike is finally over, and Hollywood can get back to work. Specific details still aren’t being shared with the public. More information will likely become available Friday when the agreement reaches the board, the publication noted. The strike is ending a little less than a month after the WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) ratified its three-year contract with the studios after being on strike earlier this year (Daily Wire).
