Senate Republicans say election results
sound warning for 2024
The Hill | Alexander Bolton
November 9, 2023
Republican senators battling to win back the Senate majority say Democratic victories Tuesday in Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are an early warning and wake-up call ahead of next year's elections.
The GOP senators, who are vying to defeat Democratic incumbents in Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other swing states say Tuesday's results show that abortion remains a potent issue that will help Democratic candidates next year. Read more

Republican hopefuls sharpen critique of Trump as election losses hang in the air
Candidates barrel through substantive but hostile debate in Miami amid warnings that Republicans have become 'a party of losers'
The Guardian | Lauren Gambino
November 9, 2023
A day after Republicans suffered a string of off-year election defeats, five of the party's presidential hopefuls barreled through a substantive yet hostile primary debate on Wednesday, clashing over policy and with each other in a competition for second place behind the absentee frontrunner Donald Trump.
On stage in Miami, the debate was dominated by foreign questions about the Israel-Hamas war, immigration, and China. But the contenders also decried the losses in Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia, warning that 2024 could end up with the re-election of Joe Biden if they were unsuccessful in breaking Trump's dominance of the Republican primary.
"We've become a party of losers," said businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, noting that Republicans lost the US House in 2018, and the Senate and the White House in 2020. He decried the "red wave that never came" in 2022. And on Tuesday night, Ramaswamy said the party again "got trounced". Read more

WG Economy: 3 Mistakes The Biden Campaign Is Making In Economic Messaging
WG Economy | David Winston
November 8, 2023
This week marks one year to go until the election, and Democrats are alarmed about the President's standing. Promoting his economic agenda and claiming accomplishments are not moving the numbers in his favor. Over the summer, the Biden campaign ran ads about their economic agenda with a $25 million ad buy, with more ads in the works. But from our tracking for Winning the Issues, the President's numbers on the economy continue to erode, now at 35-57 approve-disapprove. In fact, the October survey for winning the issues showed the President's economic job approval to be at its worst point since inflation peaked in the summer of 2022. WG Economy, November 8, 2023.pdf

Joe Biden Declares 'MAGA Lost' As He Celebrates Republican Election Woes
Newsweek | Darragh Roche
November 8, 2023
President Joe Biden has declared that "MAGA lost" as he celebrated Tuesday's election results that saw wins for Democrats and a significant victory for abortion rights in Ohio.
Biden took to social media site X, formerly Twitter, and praised the results of elections that saw Democrats rack up notable wins in the Kentucky governor's race and the Virginia legislature.
"Across the country tonight, democracy won and MAGA lost," Biden wrote on his X account on Tuesday, referring to the Make America Great Again slogan associated with former President Donald Trump, who remains the Republican frontrunner in polls for the party's 2024 presidential nomination. "Voters vote. Polls don't. Now let's go win next year. Donate to join us." Read more

House GOP re-election arm touts Republican success, predicts 'stronger' outcome in 2024 elections
The NRCC said Republicans in the House are 'arguably in just as strong, if not stronger, position to grow' their majority next year
FOX News | Kyle Morris
November 6, 2023
One year from Election Day 2024, the committee charged with electing Republicans to the House is bullish about their chances.
Even though expectations of a "red wave" in last year's midterms failed to materialize, Republicans still won control of the House from Democrats.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) said in a memo obtained by Fox News Digistal that the party is "arguably in just as strong, if not stronger, position to grow" their majority next year.
The NRCC said Republicans are successfully counteracting Democrats' fundraising abilities, at least in certain areas of the country where GOP candidates were largely outspent last cycle. Read more

House GOP calls for changing rules to boot a speaker - and some who ousted McCarthy may help
Republicans are still caught on one question before they can move forward: If the magic number to force a vote isn't one, what is it?
Politico | Jordan Carney
November 6, 2023
House Republicans who want to prevent a handful of their members from evicting another speaker could get help from a surprising group: the eight of them who helped dethrone Kevin McCarthy.
Eager to avoid a repeat of their catastrophic October, Republicans are discussing changing House rules to prevent a single member from forcing a vote to fire the speaker. So far, the entire House GOP - but especially its conservatives - trust Speaker Mike Johnson more than McCarthy.
But the Louisianan already faces many of the same headaches that doomed his predecessor.
There's a very different mood lately among the hardliners who joined Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) to oust McCarthy - or the "evil eight," as some Republicans now call them. At least half of that group say they are now open to making it harder to boot a speaker, a motion that currently requires just one member to force a vote. Read more

Donald Trump's strength is clear in Florida as Gov. Ron DeSantis tries to move past 'nonsense'
Associated Press | Adriana Gomes Licon & Bill Barrow
November 4, 2023
A booth at the Florida Republican Party's Freedom Summit made swift business of Donald Trump merchandise on Saturday, selling everything from socks to bathtub rubber ducks that paid tribute to the former president.
Vendor Peter Crotty also had Ron DeSantis T-shirts. But he reduced those items from their original $25 down to $5, an 80% discount on the Florida governor's name. The excess inventory needed to go, Crotty said.
It was just one sign of DeSantis' challenges in the 2024 Republican primary fight. Barley two months from the first nominating ballots being cast, Trump is flaunting his advantages by trying to embarrass the governor in the two rivals' shared home state, where party activists on Saturday cheered any mention of the former president and booed any criticisms of the GOP 2024 front-runner. Not just Jeff Landry. Louisiana Legislature will also take a hard turn to the right.
'We can't undo everything John Bel did, but we're going to try'
Lousiana Illuminator | Julie O'Donoghue
October 30, 2023
In 2015, when Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter was the early favorite to win the governor's race, then-Rep. Cameron Henry was considered the chosen candidate for Louisiana House Speaker.
But Democrat John Bel Edwards beat Vitter in an upset election, and Henry's hopes for the position were dashed. The House ended up selecting more moderate Taylor Barras, a Democrat-turned-Republican from New Iberia, to be speaker - in part because centrist House Republicans deemed Henry too conservative.
Eight years later though, Henry is all but assured to ascend to one of the top jobs in the Louisiana Legislature. Now a state senator, the Metairie Republican is presumed to be the chamber's next president. No other candidate is running for the job, and Henry is closely aligned with incoming governor Jeff Landry. Read more

Biden campaign heads to Miami to dig at 'MAGA extremism' during the GOP debate
The Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee will be in Florida to show a contrast with Trump, DeSantis and the other Republican presidential candidates.
NBC News | Monica Alba
November 3, 2023
When Republicans take the stage next week in Miami for their party's third presidential primary debate, President Joe Biden's campaign plans to make Florida and some of its most famous residents a central part of its response.
Although former President Donald Trump won't be on the stage Wednesday, Democrats are expected to focus their message once again on his policies, "made even worse by Ron DeSantis' extremism," according to a Biden campaign official. Read more

The third Republican debate stage will be less crowded
Four candidates appear to have qualified,
while Tim Scott's status is uncertain
ABC News | Geoffrey Skelley
November 3, 2023
It takes a village - of donors and poll respondents - to qualify for a presidential primary debate. As the presidential primary moves along, marginal candidates slowly but surely drop out as it becomes clear that they lack the financial or popular support to keep going. In recent years, one factor in this winnowing process has been a candidate's ability to qualify for primary debates - and a failure to qualify might portend the near-term end of a candidate's campaign. Heading into the GOP's third debate on Nov. 8 in Maimi, the Republican National Committee's requirements to make the stage could prove too high a hurdle for some Republicans to overcome. Read more

WG Discussion Points: New Video Contrast of Biden Campaign Ad Vs. GOP Economic Ad
WG Discussion Points | David Winston
November 3, 2023
|
With one year to go until the election, the Biden campaign is trying to improve the issue environment around their economic agenda. They have been running ads to show the steps they have taken to improve the economy and to promote "Bidenomics." In our new video message contrast based on research for Winning the Issues, we have taken a recent Biden ad that ran nationally and in battleground states and matched it up to a Republican economic ad that we developed. We had 1,000 registered voters view and rate both, and asked them whether they were more or less favorable to the respective parties and whether they believed statements in the videos.
