Dear friend,

When I realized who was calling, I almost fell out of my chair.

I was on a Zoom when I got a call from an unknown number. I didn’t answer. But then I got a text from someone who wrote that he was “here with President Obama. The President would like to connect with you.”

The phone rang again. I muted the Zoom and picked up. “This is Barack,” said a very familiar voice.”

Here’s what he said:

“Listen. I just want to tell you how proud I am of all the work you’ve been doing, and the state party’s been doing in Wisconsin. I think you guys have been a great role model for folks across the country. It’s hard work, and you guys have been just grinding it out, and steadily making progress—and, you know, it’s really making a difference, and it could make all the difference in the national elections. I’ve been watching it, and I don’t take it for granted. Just wanted to say thank you.

I’d like you to share with all those folks. Send out an email to say that I called, and I just wanted to say that I could not be more impressed with what you guys have done, and it’s how democracy’s supposed to work. And I know it’s hard work, but it’s paid off. And all of you guys should be proud.”

I’m still on a cloud. And I hope, reading that, you feel the same way. Because President Obama was really talking about you—the folks all across Wisconsin and all across the country who’ve been building democracy back up in the Badger State, vote by vote, election by election.

President Obama won Wisconsin in 2008, and again in 2012—in landslide victories. But it didn’t come easy. He knows just how intense the work can be.

And he’s seen what a difference your work and your support has made here.

How you helped defeat Scott Walker and the GOP in 2018.

How you helped Joe Biden and Kamala Harris win Wisconsin in 2020—by 0.6%.

How, in 2022, you defied the odds and helped reelect Governor Evers and Attorney General Kaul, and prevent GOP supermajorities in our gerrymandered legislature.

How, this spring, you flipped the Wisconsin Supreme Court… and gave democracy a new day in the closest state in the nation. And then mobilized to stop the GOP from impeaching Janet Protasiewicz this fall.

We do this by organizing year-round. Communicating year-round. Protecting Wisconsin voters, building coalitions, recruiting and training candidates and staff… year-round.

And next year, we *will* re-elect President Biden and Vice President Harris. We’ll re-elect Senator Baldwin, defend the Senate Democratic majority, and take back the House, too. And we’ll make the most of what could be a once-in-a-generation opportunity in the state legislature.

Together, we can do anything. We can change the world. We have before. We will again.

If you feel so moved, I’d be grateful for your support: wisdems.org/donate

Thanks for all you do,

Ben
