Flash droughts occur suddenly and intensify faster than normal droughts. Up until about twenty years ago, these were a rare phenomenon — but now, climate scientists are warning they’ll become increasingly common as the climate crisis continues.
Caused by abnormally low relative humidity and rainfall, flash droughts exacerbate the spread of wildfires and can also trigger heatwaves. Earlier this year, a flash drought in Hawaii’s grasslands led to devastating wildfires in Maui that killed 97 people and created a mass housing and mental health crisis.
