*On Veterans Day we Honor our Veterans*

This is Representative Mark Babin of Fort Fairfield with the Weekly Republican Radio Address.

Veterans Day is a day of celebration and recognition. It is also a solemn one.

Originally observed as Armistice Day, the 11th day of the 11th month marked the anniversary of the end of World War I and honored its fallen.

In 1954, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a day to commemorate all veterans of all wars and eras?past, present and future; living and dead.

Because Mainers have always answered our nation?s call to service, this Veterans Day gives me a sense of unease with so many conflicts around the world. I can?t help by think back to the last presidential administration and the relative peace that we enjoyed.

I can only hope that the current conflicts end before even more lives are lost, or America is drawn into even deeper conflicts.

On Veterans Day, let us also remember that while our veterans have left the battlefield that does not mean the battlefield has left them.

We need to remember that many veterans struggle after coming home.

Our veterans had our backs overseas, it is right we have theirs when they return to us.

The American Legion continues to remind the public that more than 6,000 veterans take their own lives each year. We should all commit to ?Be the One? to save one.

The 9-8-8 crisis line is available to assist anyone who is contemplating such a heartbreaking and tragic outcome.

We can all do our part by checking on the veterans within our social circles, donating to local veterans groups and organizations, sharing stories, and keeping mental health a priority topic when reintegrating our veterans into civilian life.

I hope you join me in taking a moment to thank and honor our Maine veterans, active duty and reserve soldiers. We owe them, and their families, a debt of gratitude for their service to our great nation.

To those veterans listening to this radio address, thank you.

Your service and sacrifice represent the best of us and the best of America. We salute you and appreciate the great costs that come with serving, and your continuing contributions to our community.
