President's Message

November is American Diabetes Month®, and the ADA has resources you can share in your school communities to help keep students safe.

The incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children and youth is increasing. School nurses provide leadership in the school setting to support diabetes resilience and student self-management, helping to ensure that children with T1D have the same opportunities for academic success as their peers.

NASN's Diabetes in Children page contains resources to assist school nurses in providing evidence-based quality care to students with T1D, including our School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Type 1 Diabetes. You can also stay up to date on the latest diabetes devices, technology, and products with Danatech. NASN is proud to collaborate with the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists to bring Danatech to NASN members, and access is free.

Managing Chronic Health Conditions

Supporting Students With Long-COVID

Symptoms of long-COVID have the potential to impact the student's physical and cognitive ability in school. The NCPD program, Long COVID-The New "Invisible Illness," initially presented at Virtual NASN2022 and newly released in the NASN Learning Center, aims to raise awareness of the effects of long-COVID in the pediatric and adolescent population, preparing schools to meet the needs of all students. Participants will be able to articulate the symptoms, describe the effects on learning/stamina, and possible accommodations necessary to support and advocate for the physical/cognitive needs of a student with long-COVID.

NASN Members: Enroll in the free online program.

Improving School Community & Student Health

Back-to-School: RSV Immunizations and Pediatric Vaccinations

Join the Office of Intergovernmental and External Affairs for the final children and family health webinar in the back-to-school series on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 1 PM ET. The webinar will feature speakers from the White House's Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, and the CDC to discuss protecting against respiratory illnesses this holiday season, RSV immunizations and getting children caught up on pediatric immunizations post-pandemic. Register for the webinar.

Related Resources: The Public Health Foundation developed this toolkit for healthcare providers with evidence-based strategies, tools, and resources to help get routine immunization coverage back to pre-pandemic levels.

School District Medicaid Enrollment & Renewal-Checklist

This academic year, school districts will play a central role in protecting millions of children and youth from losing their Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) coverage. This HHS checklist is designed to help school districts take immediate action to ensure that students maintain access to affordable health coverage.

Related Resources: NASN believes that promoting continuous and initial Medicaid and CHIP coverage provides health benefits and supports health equity for eligible children and adolescents.

National School Psychology Week

This week, we celebrate National School Psychology Week and recognize the invaluable contributions of school psychologists in promoting student success. This year's theme is "Let's Grow Together," inspired by the importance of personal and shared strengths in growth as individuals and school communities in every season of life.

Related Resources: As members of school-based mental and behavioral health teams, school nurses collaborate with school psychologists to prevent mental health problems among youth, as well as identify and support youth who do have mental health problems.

Diabetes Eye Disease Awareness Month

With diagnosed cases of type 1 and type 2 diabetes increasing among youth in the United States, it’s critical to pay attention to student’s vision and eye health: the longer a person has diabetes, the greater the risk for diabetes-related eye disease. During Diabetes-related Eye Disease Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness has a new fact sheet. Diabetes + The Eyes: Vision Health in Youth Fact Sheet provides detailed information on what parents and school nurses need to know to help youth with diabetes protect their eye health.
