Uninsured veterans in the US and the potential for coverage gains
Access to health insurance for the people who serve in the US military should be a top priority, but many remain uninsured. Not all veterans qualify for coverage through the Veterans Health Administration within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and though Medicaid and Marketplace coverage are viable options, as well as employer-based coverage, some veterans are still not insured.

How can policymakers improve coverage and access to care among US veterans? Some ways include introducing policies that make Medicaid and Marketplace coverage more accessible, maximizing VA services used for veterans who qualify, and removing the coverage gap.

Read the full report for an updated analysis that identifies the coverage sources for nonelderly US veterans in 2024 and estimates what share of veterans would be uninsured.
