This isn’t even Romney’s first attempt to slip Social Security cuts past Congress through a closed-door commission. When Donald Trump was president, Romney proposed the TRUST Act during the pandemic, hoping to pay for Trump’s tax cuts and bailouts by slashing Social Security and Medicare. We defeated him then, and we will defeat him now.
But Romney isn’t alone―last night’s Presidential debate made it clear that when Republicans talk about Social Security, they are arguing over how severely to cut it, not over how to help the people our Social Security system was created for.3 And though Donald Trump wasn’t on that stage, his record in the White House included proposals for cuts in every budget that he released, and robbing Social Security and Medicare of its dedicated funding.
