John,
As the only Palestinian American member of Congress, Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s voice and lived experience are more critical now than ever.
But in response to her leadership in calling for a ceasefire and an end to the genocide unfolding against millions of people trapped in Gaza, Rashida has been under relentless attack.
This week, the U.S. House voted in favor of Georgia Republican Rich McCormick’s resolution to censure Rashida. The resolution accuses Tlaib of "promoting false narratives regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for calling for the destruction of the state of Israel."
Rashida has done no such thing. Not even close.
But that didn’t stop 212 Republicans -- and 22 Democrats!!! -- from joining together to punish her for standing up in an attempt to save lives by calling for an immediate ceasefire now.
They should be ashamed.
Rashida reminded us that we must not lose our shared humanity. The cries of a father in Israel who listened to his daughter being attacked by Hamas not knowing if she is even still alive are the same cries of the mother in Gaza who lost all of her children in the unrelenting bombing by the Israeli government.
Rashida has repeatedly called for a ceasefire, for humanitarian aid, for the release of hostages and those arbitrarily detained, and for every American to come home.
If the United States government and the world do not speak out now, more lives will be lost. That’s why Rashida is speaking up. But by standing up, she’s being told by 234 members of the Congress that her voice does not matter and that the lives of millions of Palestinians trapped in Gaza do not matter.
We must have Rashida’s back. Your member of Congress needs to hear from you. Please sign and send a message of support for Rashida Tlaib now.
Rashida has been speaking at rallies in Washington, DC organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, IfNotNow, and others. One was an interfaith prayer vigil and rally calling on the political establishment to stop the drumbeat of war that will lead to more lives lost, especially children.
The collective punishment of people in Gaza for the attacks by Hamas terrorists has been relentless, with whole neighborhoods destroyed, and generations of families wiped out. The Israeli military has said they are just getting started and Prime Minister Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected calls for a ceasefire. This is why world leaders, scholars, and historians across the globe have called what’s happening genocide.
Fortunately, our movement demanding the human rights and protection of all people -- including Palestinians -- is growing. But you wouldn’t know it if you were in Congress last night. Republicans, and even some Democrats, are behaving like Rashida Tlaib is the real problem, not the death and destruction of innocent civilians in Gaza.
That’s why we must stand together in support of Rep. Rashida Tlaib now. Your U.S. House Representative needs to hear from their own constituents that even if they do not support a ceasefire, this censure of Rashida is unacceptable. Please sign and send your message now.
When our opposition tries to tear us down, it’s critical we rise up together.
Thank you for standing with Rashida today.
