Commissioner's Column

As the year races to a close, many charities are preparing festive season fundraising campaigns. Australians are generous and often this means there is a surge in giving at this time. With news reports of cyberattacks on a third-party telemarketing firm (with well-known charities affected), concern about the impact of cybercrime and the need for support to help charities protect their donors’ data and privacy has been heightened. Certainly, when breaches occur, they can have a significant impact on a charity’s reputation and the sector more broadly.

[[link removed]] Answering your questions

A few of the most common questions we have been hearing from charities recently...

Q. I've created a Charity Portal account, but I can't see my charity - what do I do?

A. If you cannot see your charity listed, you will need another Responsible or Authorised Person to give you access.

They'll need to log in to their own Charity Portal account and add you as a Responsible or Authorised Person. It's important they provide the same name and email when they add you as you used when signing up to the Charity Portal.

There are step-by-step instructions [[link removed]] on our website you can follow.

Q: I'm new on the board of my charity, and I don't know when our Annual Information Statement is due. How can I find out?

A. Each charity has its own due date based on the reporting year it has recorded with us. By default, charities are deemed to operate on a standard financial year (1 July to 30 June) but a charity can apply to have a different reporting year.

The due date for the Annual Information Statement for each charity is listed on its Charity Register page.
