As winter weather arrives, many Anchorage residents are facing the challenges of staying warm and dry. Help us spread life-saving resources and information by printing out the resource flyer below and posting it on local bulletin boards or wherever our vulnerable neighbors will be able to see it.

Washoe County, Nevada, achieved the quality data milestones for veteran, chronic, and all single adults experiencing homelessness

Over the years, homeless response leaders in Washoe County have often been asked: “How many people are currently experiencing homelessness in our community?”

“And no one could answer that question,” explained Catrina Peters, Homeless Services Coordinator with Washoe County Housing and Homeless Services.

Now they can. Washoe County has a comprehensive by-name data source of every person experiencing homelessness within veteran, chronic, and all-single adults populations, updated in real-time.

“In some ways, the work just started, now that we finally have the clear picture,” explained Dana Searcy, Division Director, Washoe County Housing and Homeless Services. “This is the first step in a very long journey.”

New Federal Resource - Addressing Homelessness Among Older Adults Report

The number of older adults at risk of and currently experiencing homelessness has increased rapidly in recent years, a trend that is projected to continue and further accelerate. Older adults at risk of or experiencing homelessness have unique needs compared to other populations experiencing homelessness. This report gives an overview of the population of older adults at risk of or experiencing homelessness and what services and supports are available to serve them. The report examines these topics with attention to what is known about racial and ethnic groups disproportionately impacted by homelessness. In addition, the report highlights the challenges older adults face in accessing the assistance available; innovative practices, especially those implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, and potential policy options for better serving this population.

National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC)

High Housing Costs Have Long-Lasting Impacts on Mental Health of Renters

A study published in Housing Studies, “Housing cost, consistency, and context and their relationship to health,” examines the relationship between renters’ health and three of the four “C’s” of housing insecurity: cost, consistency, and context. The authors find that the inability of renters to pay for housing costs has a direct and significant impact on both their current and future mental health. The authors also find that both prior affordability challenges and the lack of residential stability increase the likelihood of future affordability challenges, indirectly impacting health outcomes.
