Friend, let me be clear: Nobody needs an AR-15.
Assault weapons are designed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible and they have been used in some of the worst mass shootings in our country’s history. Florida itself has seen some of the worst and most hateful carnage caused by these weapons:
In Parkland, a gunman used a semi-automatic rifle to kill 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
In Orlando, a gunman used an assault rifle to kill 49 people at a LGBTQ nightclub.
In Jacksonville, a gunman used an AR-15-style rifle to kill three Black people in a racist attack.
The thing that will protect our families and our communities is banning these weapons of war from our streets. We know this ban works – Congress banned assault weapons once before and it saved lives, but the NRA made sure the ban ended and gun massacres increased by a staggering 183%. We must work together to overcome gun lobby obstruction and finally reinstate the assault weapons ban.
