John,
Last night, key elections took place across the country, and the results defied the mainstream media and “expert” consensus that the sky was falling for Democrats.
Across the country, MAGA Republicans were defeated up and down the ballot.
From Iowa to Pennsylvania to Virginia, Courier’s network of nine newsrooms covered the most important issues in these elections, calling out misinformation and the right-wing bad actors pushing it.
We're going to explain how our local Courier teams provided critical coverage of yesterday's most important elections but first: Can you contribute $5 to keep our newsrooms up and running?
Iowa School Board Races
In the run-up to Election Day, our Iowa Starting Line newsroom heavily focused coverage on ongoing school board races that featured far-right extremists from groups like ‘Moms of Liberty’ who sought to enact book bans, defund public schools, and pushed a ridiculous curriculum that white-washed American history:

With the Iowa Starting Line sounding the alarm, voters surprised experts by rejecting Moms for Liberty candidates in Ankeny, Johnston, and Urbandale.
This is the journalism our democracy needs. We believe in providing quality, accessible journalism without hiding behind a paywall or subscription. But to keep this commitment, we need support from folks like you. So, if you can, please chip in $5 to support our Iowa Starting Line team.
Pennsylvania Supreme Court Race
In the lead-up to a high-stakes Pennsylvania Supreme Court race, our newsroom The Keystone broke the story that the Republican candidate, Carolyn Carluccio wiped her campaign website of her extreme, anti-abortion record in a last-minute effort to appeal to moderate voters:
Not only did our coverage feature heavily in political ads across the Commonwealth, it was cited in The Philadelphia Inquirer’s endorsement of her Democratic rival, Daniel McCaffery.
McCaffery ultimately defeated Carluccio by six points.
Despite last night’s results, Pennsylvania is considered to be a key swing state that could decide the fate of the 2024 race.
Between now and then, The Keystone will continue to serve as a resource for voters across the Commonwealth. By supporting our work, you can ensure that our team of journalists will have the resources they need to inform and engage communities across the state.
Virginia State Legislative Races
Lastly, in what was one of the most-watched elections, our Dogwood newsroom in Virginia was among the first to call out Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration for a last-ditch illegal voter purge and heavily covered Youngkin’s promise to enact a restrictive 15-week abortion ban — which Virginians overwhelmingly did not support.
In the end, voters rejected Youngkin and MAGA Republicans, taking control of the general assembly and, ultimately, throwing a huge wrench in Youngkin’s promise to ban abortion in the Commonwealth.
Our innovative news model works, John. By focusing on the local issues voters care most about in their communities and correcting misinformation in real time, Courier Newsroom has the unique ability to make a difference in elections across the country.
With the 2024 election on the horizon, we want to grow and expand our work’s reach. But we can only do this with your support. So, will you pitch in $5 today to help our newsrooms fuel more victories in '24 and beyond?
Thanks so much!
Together,
— Courier Newsroom
