John— Yesterday, I was in the room when the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for the only Second Amendment case this term. The case is [ [link removed] ]USA v. Rahimi, and the Court’s decision will have widespread consequences. After Zackey Rahimi was convicted of illegally possessing a gun while under a domestic violence protective order, he challenged his conviction, claiming that his Second Amendment rights trump public safety. Now that the case has reached the Supreme Court, it has the potential to threaten scores of other lifesaving gun laws, putting us all at risk. If the justices uphold the lower court decision in Rahimi, domestic abusers, including those who currently can’t buy firearms because a court has found them to be an active threat to others, may gain unfettered access to guns. We are fighting this possibility every step of the way.

While the justices heard arguments, [ [link removed] ]GIFFORDS Law Center was on the
steps of the Supreme Court with our partners hosting a rally to bring
attention to this critical case and urge the Court to preserve domestic
violence gun laws. Hundreds joined the crowd as Gabby spoke alongside
other voices of reason, including Senators Chris Murphy and Amy Klobuchar.

Weak gun laws make domestic violence deadlier. When an abuser has access
to a gun, it is five times more likely that a woman will be murdered. At
least 4.5 million women in the United States today report that an intimate
partner used a gun to threaten them.

[ [link removed] ]Our attorneys are fighting with all they have to defend lifesaving gun
laws and protect victims of domestic violence, but we need your help.
Please stand with GIFFORDS Law Center by making a donation today—any
amount helps.

While the Supreme Court heard oral arguments, we made sure they heard our
voices too. Will you add yours?

All the best,
Esther
